Impact on Health

For the past 25 years William has worked for the same firm pre-fabricating concrete buildings. Despite the introduction of automation, his job still requires moderate lifting and manual handling. Now aged 58 although in good general health, William is now beginning to feel the physical demands of his job, often experiencing general stiffness and low back pain at the end of the day. His wants to continue working until 65, by which time his youngest children will have graduated from university. However, he is concerned that, even though he isn’t ‘sick’, he may not be fit enough to continue for a further 7 years. He is prepared to retrain for a less physically demanding job, but is anxious about anything that might reduce his income.
